The 2011 Kezar Lake + 6 Ponds Water Quality Report, commissioned by the KLWA from FB Environmental,is complete and is posted in ‘Water Quality Reports’. This sentence really leaped off the page:

“Kezar Lake remains one of Maine’s cleanest and clearest lakes with above average water quality and clarity.”

This is not accidental! We have worked very hard over many years to protect the lake and ponds. Keep up the good work!

CBI Save 6-13-11 !!!

Aaron Tripp at Narrows Town Landing

On Monday June 13th at 8.00 in the morning,a boat was launching at the Narrows public ramp on Kezar Lake. A plant was found on the boat by Aaron Tripp, one of the paid Courtesy Boat Inspectors (CBI’s) hired by the Lovell Invasive Plant Prevention Committee, before it was put in the water. The plant was bagged and Gene Spender (LIPPC) took it to the Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP) in Auburn Maine, where qualified biologists are on staff. The plant was identified as Eurasian Water Milfoil by VLMP. This is one of the worst invasives. The VLMP works closely with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP),which confirmed this identification. This plant is native to Eurasia and Africa. This was really a potential ‘double-save’ because the boat had previously been in Tripp Lake,in Poland,Maine, which had not been one of the lakes identified as having milfoil. Now the DEP is working with the Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program to assemble Maine’s Invasive Plant Patrol First Responders team to conduct a comprehensive (Level III) invasive plant survey on Tripp Lake. The IPP First Responders team, organized and led by the VLMP,is primarily comprised of trained, experienced and certified Invasive Plant Patroller volunteers. The first responder team was activated in 2009 in response to the hydrilla find on Damariscotta Lake.

This invasive would not have been found last year, because inspections were not done on Mondays!

The Lovell Invasive Plant Prevention Committee (LIPPC) was able to greatly expand inspection time this year, thanks to the vote at the March Town Meeting which resulted in more funding from the town. There has also been a huge effort recruiting volunteer inspectors, many of whom are KLWA members who have stepped up to the plate. This success is at risk if we do not continue to get volunteers to help us cover the many key launch sites in our watershed. Your assistance in volunteer time is greatly needed in this ongoing effort. Please contact Ed Poliquin (925-1125 ,fishing.with.ed@gmail.com) ,or Marty Prox (207-452-2663,prox@fairpoint.net),to let us know when you can help.
